On Thursday, May 19, 2022, the First Lady of Burundi Her Excellency Angeline NDAYISHIMIYE enhanced with her presence the official opening ceremonies of the Ordinary General Assembly of the ICGLR Regional Women’s Forum.
The General Assembly was organized with the aim of assessing the impact of Covid-19 and the activities of armed groups on women and children in the 12 ICGLR Member States, then formulating key recommendations and d adopt a strategic plan to support the implementation of the ICGLR compact and legal framework on gender
The First Lady of the Republic of Burundi Her Excellency Angeline NDAYISHIMIYE once again welcomed all the delegations from the member countries of the ICGLR to our beautiful country, Burundi.
In her address, as the General Assembly was organized to assess the impact of Covid-19 and the activities of armed groups on women and children in the 12 ICGLR Member States, and then to formulate key recommendations and to adopt a strategic plan to support the implementation of the ICGLR pact and the legal framework on gender, the First Lady of the Republic of Burundi Her Excellency Angeline NDAYISHIMIYE asked all participants to work assiduously to identify the best strategies to adopt in order to establish lasting peace in all the countries of the Great Lakes Region and enable all women to contribute to the development of their families, their nations and the sub-region. She expressed her wish that each country set up the National Women’s Forum so that the Regional Women’s Forum is active and properly fulfills its missions.
The First Lady Her Excellency Angeline NDAYISHIMIYE did not fail to thank all the participants once again, for having sacrificed their agenda by favoring participation in the meeting. She also addressed her heartfelt thanks to all those involved in the organization of this meeting, particularly the Executive Secretariat of the ICGLR, the African Union, the office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations in the Greater Region, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and UN WOMEN.
In their speeches, other authorities such as the Minister in charge of Gender and authorities from various representations of the ICGLR and the Regional Women’s Forum had to make their speeches.
All the speeches that were made by these authorities focused on the satisfaction in the organization of the General based on the items on the agenda and the importance of the Regional Women’s Forum in the Great Lakes Regionfor the female gender. The meeting allows the review on the strengthening of activities aimed at the consolidation of security and peace, rapprochement, respect for women’s rights and economic development.
It should be noted that the activities of the General Assembly which began on Thursday, May 18, 2022 ended on Friday, May 19, 2022 with the election of Madam Honorable Sabine NTAKARUTIMANA of Burundi as President of the ICGLR Regional Women’s Forum for a term of 2 years.
This meeting was held in Burundi for the first time. The place where the next meeting will be held is not yet specified, the rotation related to the place where this meeting is held being proposed by the Executive Secretary of the ICGLR. (MFADC)
