On Friday, February 6, 2026, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and Development Cooperation, Mr. Sophonie NITUNGA, received in audience Mr. SANGARE Daouda, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire in Burundi, who came for a courtesy visit.

In the context of strengthening the bilateral and friendly cooperation that exists between Burundi and Côte d’Ivoire, Mr. Daouda expressed the wish for the high Burundian authorities to visit his country in the near future.
In the same spirit of cooperation, the Honorary Consul suggested negotiating visa exemptions for Burundians traveling to Côte d’Ivoire.
Speaking about key areas where his country wishes to contribute, he mentioned agriculture, mining, energy, sports, and transportation, where he proposed an innovative idea of a ‘’boat-bus’’ that could transport goods and people across Lake Tanganyika to facilitate movement between the DRC and Tanzania.

He also informed that Côte d’Ivoire has experience in improving oil palm seed varieties.
Regarding expertise in social housing, Mr. Daouda proposed prefabricated houses for state officials, payable over thirty years. He also suggested high-rise constructions to free up arable land and find a solution to the issue of limited land space.
Mr. Sophonie reminded that Burundi is approaching a very crucial period in its history, the one of presiding over the African Union for the year 2026, and that technical support from partner countries is very important.
