The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation received in audience the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Burundi.

On Thursday August 29, 2024, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation His Excellency Ambassador Albert SHINGIRO received in audience Mrs. Amira ABDELRAHIM ALI MOSTAPHA, Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Burundi. They exchanged views on bilateral and regional issues of common interest.

Cooperation between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Republic of Burundi is governed by the General Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation, signed on March 18 1986 and ratified on July 06 1987. This Agreement replaced the Cultural, Technical and Scientific Cooperation Agreement signed in April 1973. This Agreement provides for sustained cooperation in various fields, including health, education, trade, transport, communication, sport, agriculture and livestock breeding, and security. The Agreement also provides for a Joint Cooperation Commission between the two countries to facilitate its implementation.

Since then, six sessions of the Joint Cooperation Commission have been held. The conclusions and recommendations of these two sessions have been implemented on the whole, and others are in progress.

Burundi and Egypt share a common history based on the River Nile. Being one of the world’s longest rivers, the famous Nile has its southernmost source in Burundi, in the south of the country, in Bururi province, Rutovu commune. In the implementation of the vision of the Head of State of Burundi of an emerging country by 2040 and developed in 2060, the Burundian government has put the spotlight on a number of priority sectors. Five-pronged economic diplomacy is one of Burundi’s foreign policy strategies for achieving this goal. Burundi is always on the lookout for foreign partnerships to promote tourism. The promotion of tourism is the path chosen by Burundi for its unique, world-famous tourist attractions. As the land is still untouched, foreign investment in the field is desirable to develop the southernmost source of this river that crosses six countries.
