Strengthening Bilateral Relations between Burundi and Morocco: A Strategic Partnership in Progress

On May 12, 2025, in Rabat, His Excellency Albert Shingiro, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation of the Republic of Burundi, together with His Excellency Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Morocco, officially opened the ministerial session of the Joint Commission for Cooperation between Burundi and the Kingdom of Morocco. This meeting marked a significant step forward in strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.

During this session, both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to developing, intensifying, and diversifying their cooperation in various fields, in accordance with the strategic orientations of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and His Excellency President Evariste Ndayishimiye. This commitment was reflected in the signing of a joint communiqué and the decision to finalize the 2025-2027 Roadmap during the next Joint Cooperation Commission scheduled to take place in Burundi.

The two ministers agreed to promote ambitious and fruitful economic cooperation, notably in agriculture, energy, vocational training, infrastructure, health, public finance and mining. They also stressed the importance of strengthening political dialogue between the two countries to further boost bilateral relations.

As part of improving bilateral relations, an agreement has been signed to abolish visas for holders of diplomatic, service and special passports between Burundi and Morocco. This measure aims at facilitating exchanges and the mobility of officials between the two nations.

In the multilateral context, both parties agreed to mutually support each other’s candidacies within regional and international cooperation mechanisms. On this occasion, Minister Shingiro announced his country’s firm and unequivocal support for Morocco’s candidacy for the non-permanent member position on the United Nations Security Council for the period 2028-2029.

This ministerial session of the Joint Commission for Cooperation between Burundi and Morocco reflects the willingness of both countries to strengthen a strategic
partnership based on mutual respect, solidarity, and shared development.
