Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Burundi
On February 11, 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation of Burundi HE Albert SHINGIRO and the Mission Director of USAID Burundi-Rwanda, on behalf of the respective Governments, proceeded to the signature of an Assistance Agreement between the two countries.
Mr. Jonathan Kamin, Mission Director of USAID Burundi- Rwanda, accompanied by the US Ambassador to Burundi Mrs. Melanie H. Haggins said that the USA is proud of the recovery of cooperation relations between the two countries. It is for this reason that the USA grants a kitty of 400 million dollars to support the Government of Burundi in its sustainable development.
Speaking, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation HE Albert SHINGIRO, said that he was delighted with the signature of this Agreement which is a reaffirmation of the common will of the USA and Burundi to strengthen and to affirm links of friendship and harmonious collaboration.
The Minister took this opportunity to welcome the recent decision of the American President to remove the state of emergency concerning the situation in Burundi and the end of the sanctions targeted against certain high-ranking Burundian personalities.
Ambassador Albert Shingiro pointed out that the objective of this Agreement is to lay the foundations for sustainable development to support the capitalization of peace in Burundi. In concrete terms, there are three main key areas to be financed: the development of human capital, which revolves around three main actions, namely strengthening the quality of health services and systems, humanitarian assistance to vulnerable groups and support for education systems; the capitalization of peace with two main themes such as the strengthening of good governance and the participation of civil society and the private sector; and the improvement of the environment for sustainable development which articulates around two main areas, namely the growth of agricultural productivity and support for the environment and adaptation to climate change.
In closing, the Minister, on behalf of the Government of Burundi, warmly thanked the American Administration for this important contribution.
