On September 23, 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation, His Excellency Ambassador Edouard Bizimana, announced Burundi’s position in New York during the high-level meeting on Haiti held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. He emphasized the urgency of an international response that is coordinated, sustainable, and resilient to address the crisis facing the country. The humanitarian situation in Haiti is extremely concerning, marked by a sharp rise in armed gangs, widespread insecurity, and the collapse of basic services. These multidimensional challenges require not only immediate support but also long-term strategic solutions.
In this spirit, Burundi expresses its solidarity with the Haitian people and emphasizes that the return to stability depends on several key factors. According to Minister Bizimana, support for the Haitian National Police and the upcoming multinational security support mission is essential. Furthermore, it is urgent to fund the humanitarian response plan and to provide significant support for the country’s recovery and development initiatives.
In this speech, the Minister emphasized that security alone will not be enough. It is crucial to address the root causes of the crisis, such as poverty, inequalities, unemployment, impunity, and weak institutions. Burundi therefore calls for an integrated approach, where humanitarian, security, and development efforts move forward in a coordinated manner.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation also added that the participation of Haitians, especially women and youth, is essential in the process of transition and reconstruction. Nothing sustainable can be built without real national ownership. It is imperative to act with determination, because Haiti’s stability is at stake, as is that of the entire region. Burundi stands ready to contribute to this collective effort in a spirit of African and international solidarity.
