The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation organized the Diaspora Week, 2024 Edition from July 30 to August 1st 2024 under the theme: “The role of the Burundian diaspora in implementing the vision of Burundi as an emerging country by 2040 and a developed country by 2060”.The opening activities of this week were enhanced by the President of the Republic of Burundi, His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye at Musumba Hôtel in Kayanza Province.
In the opening ceremonies of the Diaspora Week, the President of the Republic of Burundi His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye held a moralizing session for the Burundian Diaspora and in Burundi, for the executives, senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation and senior officials of the Government of Burundi.
The Head of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Burundi, Mrs. Emanuela MUSCARA, delivered a speech to launch Burundi Diaspora Week. She expressed her gratitude towards His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Burundi, and her appreciation for leadership in Diaspora Week activities. His commitment to fostering a strong and inclusive relationship between the diaspora and those living in the country each year will promote further implementation of the vision of Burundi as an emerging country by 2040 and a developed country by 2060.
The Diaspora plays a vital role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as in humanitarian responses, by leveraging their skills, networks and capital to support families, entrepreneurship and the creation of work opportunities. The involvement of the Diaspora takes place in a comprehensive way at different economic, human, social and cultural levels.
As the United Nations agency responsible for migration, the International Organization for Migration supports Member States in maximizing the potential of migration by improving regular migration channels. The International Organization for Migration supports the organization of Diaspora Summits, which aims to bring together governments, diaspora organizations and private sector to encourage dialogue and involve transnational communities as catalyst agents of sustainable development.
On the first day, the President of the Republic of Burundi, His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye, spoke on the theme of Diaspora Week. The President of the Republic of Burundi gave to participants the opportunity to discuss about the vision. Some of the diaspora gave their opinion. In his speech, he invited Burundians to conscience awakeness, to patriotism, not to rely on external support, because the weaning time is over, to change of mentality and to mobilization of the means to carry out major development projects to achieve the vision of Burundi as an emerging country in 2040 and a developed country in 2060.
Before his closing remarks, the President of the Republic of Burundi, His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye, gave the floor to the participants and called on Burundian Diaspora to love their country, support the actions of the Economic Empowerment program and Youth Employment Program in order to contribute to the development of their country.
