The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation is organizing the celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa and the United Nations System in Burundi, organized the celebrations for Nelson Mandela International Day at the Urisanze Center in Kinama, Bujumbura City Hall, on Friday, July 18, 2025, under the theme: ‘’The fight against poverty and inequality is still in our hands, with particular attention to vulnerable social groups.’’

Representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, Permanent Secretary Ferdinand Bashikako said that Nelson Mandela was a person who left an indelible mark on the history of humanity. He is a global reference point for cementing democracy and reconciliation. He noted that freedom does not only mean freeing oneself from one’s shackles, but also living in a way that values and consolidates the freedom of others.

 

He said that Burundian people remain grateful for Nelson Mandela’s role in the inter-Burundian peace process during his resumption of mediation in 1999. He brought hearts and minds together with his voice of wisdom by achieving the signing of the Arusha Agreement for peace, national reconciliation, and democracy in the country. Burundi is committed to following Nelson Mandela’s legacy in building a more equitable, inclusive, and resilient society, faithful to Burundi’s vision of becoming an ‘’emerging country by 2040 and a developed country by 2060.’’ Mr. Ferdinand Bashikako concluded by inviting participants to contribute to do their part in building a more just world.

The South African Ambassador to Burundi, His Excellency Mbulelo Shadrack BUNGANE, spoke briefly about Nelson Mandela’s life and his bravery in the pursuit of peace, human rights, and reconciliation for nations. The representative of the Urisanze Center, Mrs. Anne Marie, spoke about the mission of the Urisanze Center. She explained that the center’s mission is to improve the living conditions of the elderly.This center has branches throughout the country. She reported that this day was celebrated at the Urisanze center in order to introduce participants to the center and its future prospects. She reported that there is a project to expand the Urisanze center and took this opportunity to request support. There is also a project to raise laying hens and find sufficient vehicles for the center.

The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Burundi, Mrs. Violet Kakyomya, said that Nelson Mandela dedicated himself to transforming oppression into reconciliation. He served the United Nations in the cause of peace, freedom, justice, and equality. The representative of the African Union Office in the Great Lakes region in Burundi, Mr. SGHAIR M’BARECK SAID, said that Nelson Mandela Day is an inspiration to everyone. In addition to promoting peace and reconciliation, he fought against poverty.

During this day, numerous humanitarian initiatives were carried out, including free medical consultations conducted by a team of Chinese doctors in partnership with the United Nations Clinic; cleaning and painting walls; distributing meals to the elderly; and planting fruit trees within the grounds of the Urisanze center. Testimonials highlighting the benefits of the center for the elderly were shared.
