The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation His Excellency Ambassador Albert Shingiro has been traveling since September 19, 2024, at the head of the Burundian delegation, to take part in the major international meeting that is the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. In this meeting of heads of state and government and other national delegates, Minister Shingiro had the opportunity to convey Burundi’s voice on global priorities and challenges as well as ways and means that could be implemented to achieve peace and security as well as sustainable development in the world. Since the opening of the Summit of the Future held under the theme: “Leaving no one behind: acting together for peace, sustainable development and human dignity of present and future generations”, the Minister in charge of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Burundi has reiterated Burundi’s commitment to supporting effective, inclusive and equitable multilateralism. In this context, during the Security Council, Ambassador Albert Shingiro stressed the need and importance of reforming the Security Council so that Africa can have a permanent seat there.
It is often said that two birds with one stone are killed. This seasoned diplomat was able to make his working visit to New York at the United Nations headquarters a very fruitful working moment. It was the time for bilateral meetings during which he was able to discuss with his colleagues certain issues of common interest, both bilateral and multilateral. Some of the meetings with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Belize, Uzbekistan, Madagascar and San Marino were respectively concluded by the signing of joint communiqués or Agreements for the establishment of diplomatic relations while that with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary was concluded by the signing of an Agreement for the granting of scholarships to young Burundians.
The Head of Burundian diplomacy His Excellency Ambassador Albert Shingiro also held fruitful meetings with some heads of state and government, starting with the number one of the host country His Excellency Joe Bide and his wife, the President of the French Republic His Excellency Emmanuel Macro, that of Turkey His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo His Excellency Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo who took the opportunity to convey their warm greetings to the President of the Republic of Burundi His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye as well as the Prime Minister of Canada His Excellency Justin Trudeau.
