As part of the monitoring of infrastructure built in Burundi through cooperation between Burundi and its foreign partners, H.E. Ambassador Édouard Bizimana, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation, visited the site this Tuesday, May 5, 2026, to assess the condition of Boulevard du Japon, located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. This visit followed the one carried out on the same boulevard jointly with the President of JICA during his visit to Burundi in January 2026.
The Minister’s latest visit made it possible to observe considerable damage: the situation has seriously deteriorated, and the road has become almost impassable, posing serious problems for local residents and economic activities in the area.
The Ministry took note that JICA experts will begin feasibility studies for the rehabilitation of the boulevard at the beginning of June 2026. These studies should make it possible to define the technical solutions needed to restore this strategic road to good condition.
In the meantime, His Excellency Minister Édouard Bizimana encourages the relevant national services to consider emergency short-term measures, within the limits of their means, to limit or mitigate the damage.
