On September 1, 2025, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and Development Cooperation, His Excellency Ambassador Édouard BIZIMANA, recently received His Excellency Mr. Upender Singh Rawat, Ambassador of the Republic of India to Burundi. This meeting underscores the importance of bilateral relations between Burundi and India, which are marked by mutually beneficial cooperation and strong friendship.

During their discussions, Minister BIZIMANA and Ambassador Rawat discussed the current state of bilateral cooperation, which extends to several strategic sectors. India has provided significant support to Burundi in various fields such as technology, education, university training, and energy. In the energy sector, the Kabu 16 dam construction project is particularly noteworthy. This project, which is essential for energy supply and water resource management, demonstrates India’s commitment to supporting Burundi’s sustainable development. These efforts aim at strengthening local capacities and provide education and training opportunities that are crucial for the country’s economic development. India has also invested in infrastructure and health projects, helping to improve the living conditions of Burundian people. These initiatives demonstrate India’s desire to position itself as a key partner in Burundi’s development, while supporting its aspirations for economic emergence.
The two diplomats also discussed issues of international importance, including India’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council for the period 2028–2029. Cooperation between Burundi and India also extends to organizations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), where the two nations work together to promote safe and efficient aviation standards and practices. Burundi and India share common interests in areas such as counterterrorism and climate change, strengthening their collaboration on global issues. These joint efforts are essential to promoting peace and security in their respective regions. This visit by His Excellency Mr. Upender Singh Rawat is part of a protocol aimed at expressing his sincere congratulations to Minister BIZIMANA on his appointment to the position of Minister. Beyond this first meeting, Ambassador Rawat has also planned other protocol visits to certain high-ranking officials of the Burundian government. These visits aim at strengthening diplomatic ties and promote constructive dialogue, thereby reinforcing mutual commitment to fruitful and lasting cooperation.
