On March 3, 2026, His Excellency Edouard Bizimana, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation of Burundi met with Mr. Michael Wimmer, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to Burundi. This meeting provided an opportunity for the two diplomats to discuss various topics of common interest, including the regional security situation and ongoing projects.

Mr. Wimmer congratulated the Minister on the confidence bestowed to Burundi for Chairpersonship of the African Union in 2026, highlighting that this achievement is a great honor not only for Burundi, but also for the entire African continent.
Regarding the current humanitarian and security situation, Minister Bizimana expressed his concerns about the ongoing precarious situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Mr. Wimmer , for his part, indicated that the Kingdom of Belgium had allocated one million dollars to support Congolese refugees in Burundi. He also thanked the Burundian Government for its efforts to promote peace in the region and for its generosity towards refugees.

This meeting demonstrates the strong diplomatic relations between Burundi and Belgium, as well as the commitment of both countries to work hand in hand in addressing regional challenges.
