Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Burundi
On Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Bujumbura, His Excellency Ambassador Edouard Bizimana Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and Development Cooperation received Mr. Billy Stewart, Chargé d’Affaires, and Ms. Anna Mijnlief, Political Advisor at the Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, for a courtesy visit.
Discussions focused on various topics of mutual interest, particularly the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Stewart commended the excellent ties of friendship and cooperation between the United Kingdom and Burundi, as well as the hospitality they had were shown during their stay in the country. He welcomed the fruitful collaboration between the Ministry and the Embassy, as well as the harmonious relations between Burundian authorities and religious communities. He also highlighted development projects undertaken by his country in Burundi—specifically in health, education, and energy sectorsciting initiatives such as WEZA Power and Rusizi III. Furthermore, he indicated that the United Kingdom plans to support efforts to combat the Ebola virus within Burundi.
In his response, His Excellency Minister Édouard Bizimana expressed satisfaction with the areas of cooperation already underway, while emphasizing the need to strengthen them further. Regarding development projects, he stressed the importance of promoting regional initiatives that include all countries of the sub-region, in order to consolidate integration, peace, and security. The Minister also voiced concern over the continuing deterioration of the humanitarian and security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. He noted that insecurity hampers efforts to combat the Ebola epidemic, as mass population displacements facilitate the spread of the virus. In this regard, he called upon the United Kingdom and all of Burundi’s partners to increase their engagement in upholding and implementing peace and security initiatives already adopted, among others Resolution 2773, as well as the Doha and Washington Agreements. In conclusion, His Excellency Edouard Bizimana reaffirmed Burundi’s commitment to continuing the implementation of the security and economic measures necessary to achieve the national vision of building a stable and prosperous country.
