Annual Retreat for Burundi’s Heads of Diplomatic and Consular Missions

 On Tuesday, June 23, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and Development Cooperation organized the annual retreat for Burundi’s Heads of Diplomatic and Consular Missions.Held under the theme “Towards a Burundian diplomacy adapted to global and regional challenges,” this meeting serves as a key forum for diplomats to report to the Government and receive new strategic guidelines to ensure better representation of the country.

In his opening remarks, His Excellency Ambassador Édouard Bizimana, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and Development Cooperation, highlighted the particular aspect of this edition. It takes place while Burundi holds the presidency of the African Union and amidst an international context marked by deep and rapid changes: political crises, economic and diplomatic upheavals, security challenges, pandemics, digital transitions, and new migration dynamics.

The Minister emphasized the need for Burundian diplomacy to move beyond its traditional role of representation and become proactive, innovative, agile, and resolutely focused on defending national interests.

Facing multidimensional challenges, Burundi aims to build a diplomatic service able to:

. Anticipate changes and adapt to the quick evolution of the international system.

.Grasp opportunities presented by globalization to strengthen its position.

.Effectively defend the country’s interests on the regional and international stages.

.Promote diplomatic innovation by integrating digital and security opportunies into its strategies.
