On February 12, 2026, on the sidelines of the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation, His Excellency Edouard BIZIMANA, had a fruitful meeting with his Algerian counterpart, His Excellency Ahmed Attaf. This exchange marks a new stage in the development of historical and diplomatic relations between Burundi and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.

The two Ministers expressed their satisfaction with the strength of their bilateral relations, emphasizing the importance of further strengthening these ties for the benefit of both nations. Minister Edouard announced Burundi’s upcoming accession to the presidency of the African Union, a role he approaches with humility and patriotism. He also mentioned the crucial need for increased support from partners, emphasizing that this presidency is a collective responsibility for Africa.
His Excellency Ahmed Attaf assured his Burundian counterpart of Algeria’s commitment to supporting this initiative. He stressed that this mission is not that of a single country, but a source of pride shared by the entire African continent. Algeria stands ready to offer Burundi all the assistance it needs to succeed in this task.
In addition, the Algerian Minister expressed his desire to send a team to Burundi to prepare a state visit. This initiative aims to identify new areas of cooperation, thereby strengthening relations between the two countries beyond mere diplomatic exchanges.
This meeting demonstrates the willingness of both nations to work hand in hand for the progress and development of Africa, while highlighting Burundi’s key role on the continental stage.
