\"\"<\/a>This Wednesday, August 12, 2026, in Bujumbura, Mr. S\u00e9verin Mbarubukeye, Permanent Secretary in charge of East African Community Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation, officially opened the national consultation meeting on the draft Integrated Water Resources Management Strategy of the East African Community (2026\u20132035) and its action plan.<\/p>\n

Organized over three days, this meeting aims at gathering technical contributions from national stakeholders in order to develop a regional policy instrument designed
\nto promote the sustainable, coordinated, and integrated management of water resources. It is part of the implementation of Article 111(2) (d) of the Treaty establishing the East African Community, which commits Partner States to cooperate in the sustainable management of shared natural resources.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Water, the foundation of life and development, supports agriculture, energy, industry, biodiversity, public health, and the livelihoods of millions of people. However, the region is facing growing challenges: climate change, rapid population growth, watershed degradation, pollution, pressure on water demand, as well as the recurrent
\nimpacts of floods and droughts. These issues require stronger regional cooperation and coordinated responses.<\/p>\n

This national consultation is particularly significant, as it is taking place while Burundi holds the presidency of the African Union, under the 2026 theme: \u201cEnsuring sustainable availability of water and safe sanitation systems to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063.\u201d The validation of this regional strategy will directly contribute to this continental priority by promoting sustainable water governance, strengthening cooperation over shared resources, and improving resilience to climate change.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The Government of Burundi remains fully committed to implementing EAC projects and programmes aimed at strengthening regional integration and sustainable development. To this end, it has already adopted several legal and policy instruments, including the National Water Policy, the National Water Strategy, the Water Code, the
