On Wednesday June 3rd<\/sup> 2026, the Director-General for East African Community Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation, Mr Aim\u00e9 Nkurunziza, officially launched the National Consultative Meeting on COP31.<\/p>\n

Organized in all EAC partner states, those meetings aim to gather national contributions to the draft Strategy and Action Plan on Climate Change (2026\u20132036). They also aim to prepare common positions ahead of COP31, scheduled to take place in Antalya (Turkey) from 9 to 20 November 2026. A regional validation meeting will be held from 12 to 14 August 2026 in Mombasa, Kenya.<\/p>\n

In his address, Mr Nkurunziza highlighted the critical socio-economic and environmental impact of climate change in the region. He mentioned the rising water levels of Lake Tanganyika and the damage recorded in Gatumba specifically. Burundi, he stated, remains fully committed to addressing these challenges through enhanced regional and international cooperation.<\/p>\n

The country is already incorporating climate resilience into its National Development Plan, which is in line with the \u2018Burundi Vision\u2019 to become an emerging country by 2040 and a developed country by 2060. Furthermore, it has adopted the Green Climate Fund Country Programme (2024\u20132027).<\/p>\n

The Director-General praised the important role played by the EAC Secretariat, as well as the valuable support provided by technical and financial partners, notably GIZ. Finally, he called on national experts to actively contribute to this work in order to ensure that Burundi and the East African Community adopt a coordinated and ambitious position at COP31.<\/p>\n
