On 12 June 2025, , the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, Mr Ferdinand BASHIKAKO, represented the Government of Burundi at the celebration of the National Day of the Russian Federation in Bujumbura. The event, organized by His Excellency Mr Valery Mikhaylov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Burundi, was an opportunity to reaffirm the excellent bilateral relations between the two countries, based on mutual respect for sovereignty and a shared commitment to development.<\/p>\n

In his speech on the occasion, Ambassador Mikhaylov expressed his deep gratitude to the participants, while highlighting two major commemorations: the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Second World War and the decisive role played by Russia in the creation of the United Nations. He stressed that the defeat of Nazism, to which the Soviet Union made a major contribution, had enabled the emergence of a world order based on multilateral cooperation and respect for international law<\/p>\n

His Excellency Valery Mikhaylov also spoke of the diplomatic relations established between Russia and Burundi since 1962, describing Burundi as a reliable partner in Africa according to the words of President Vladimir Putin. He highlighted the training of several thousand Burundian specialists in Russia, as well as recent advances in the fields of energy cooperation and public health, notably through the inauguration of a Russian-Burundian laboratory.<\/p>\n

Concluding his speech, the Ambassador emphasized the joint efforts in the field of education, illustrated by the granting of scholarships and the opening of a Russian language centre in Bujumbura. In his view, these initiatives bear witness to a partnership based on mutual trust and geared towards sustainable and inclusive development.<\/p>\n

For his part, Permanent Secretary Ferdinand BASHIKAKO paid tribute to the 63 years of diplomatic relations between Burundi and Russia, highlighting the richness and diversity of the ties that unite the two nations. He also referred to recent events, such as the Sochi meeting and the signing of cooperation agreements, which illustrate the vitality of a constantly evolving relationship.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Mr BASHIKAKO called for the strategic partnership between the two countries to be strengthened, stressing the need to continue Burundi’s development efforts within the framework of the National Development Plan (NDP). He expressed his confidence in the continuity of this collaboration and encouraged partners, including Russia, to remain constant and committed supporters. Referring to the elections recently held in Burundi, he reaffirmed the country’s commitment to democracy and transparency, while praising the role of international observers, including Russians, in ensuring the smooth conduct of the electoral process.<\/p>\n

In short, the speeches by Mr Bashikako and Ambassador Mikhaylov illustrated the strength of the bond of friendship and the depth of the strategic partnership between Burundi and the Russian Federation. Using language marked by diplomatic respect and shared vision, these speeches reinforced the idea that the future of relations between the two countries is based on trust, mutual cooperation and a resolute commitment to the progress and prosperity of both peoples.<\/p>\n
