<\/p>\nOn Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at the Kiriri Garden Hotel in Bujumbura, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation His Excellency Ambassador Albert SHINGIRO and the Ambassador Delegate of the European Union Her Excellency Madame Elisabetta PIETROBON co-chaired the first session of the partnership dialogue between the Government of Burundi and the European Union as provided by the Samoa Agreement binding on the one hand, the African countries, the Caribbean and the Pacific and on the other hand, the European Union and its member states.<\/p>\n

In their respective speeches, the Ambassador of the European Union to Burundi and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation stressed that the Samoa Agreement is a new legal framework for cooperation which announces a new era of the collaboration, of the dialogue and the consultation through the mutual respectful strategic partnerships while being adapted to the challenges facing the humanity. That Samoa Agreement further aims to strengthen the capacity of the European Union and the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) to jointly address the global challenges and the cooperation between the two parties in a spirit of the trust and mutual respect in six priority areas, namely, the democracy and human rights, the sustainable economic growth and development, the climate change, the human and social development, the peace and security, the migration and mobility. It is at the same time flexible and open to the development of the bilateral and regional relations aimed at improving the well-being of their populations.<\/p>\n
During that session, the two parties also discussed subjects of common interest, notably the modalities of the cooperation between Burundi and the European Union, the economic situation and the business climate, the rule of law and human rights as well as the cooperation on the regional and the international scene. They also reaffirmed their attachment to the Charter of the United Nations and in particular to its principles of the peace and the security in the world and committed to further consolidating the friendly relations and the mutually beneficial cooperation.<\/p>\n

They welcomed the constructive climate which governed their discussions. The continuation of the partnership dialogue is inspired by a shared desire for commitment for the benefit of the Burundian and European people.
