Official inauguration of the honorary Italian consulate in Burundi

This Friday, September 17, 2021, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation Mr. Ferdinand Bashikako accompanied by the Ambassador of the Republic of Italy in Burundi HEMr. Massimiliano MAZZANTI proceeded to the opening ceremony of the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Italy in Bujumbura.

In his remarks, the Ambassador of the Republic of Italy in Burundi said that the opening of an Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Italy in Burundi represents the realization of the will of HE Evariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of Burundi.

Ambassador Massimiliano MAZZANTI noted that the opening of a Consulate is never a useless act in relations between States. He added that this sovereign decision of Italy and Burundi reflects the strong will to strengthen the friendship between our two countries, and once again demonstrates the intention to strengthen bilateral political, economic and social relations.

The Ambassador of Italy to Burundi reported that Italy intends to support all initiatives that aim to consolidate the agricultural and poultry sector in order to guarantee food security, to contribute to the solar electrification of the country and to improve the health system in these hard times of the pandemic.

As for the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation Mr. Ferdinand Bashikako, he thanked HE Ambassador Massimiliano MAZZANTI for the invitation to share the great moment, the historic moment in interstate relations. He said diplomatic representation reflects the firm desire to boost the bonds of friendship and partnership between nations and their respective peoples.

Mr. Ferdinand Bashikako addressed his warm congratulations to Mrs. Caterina IAMETTI on her appointment as Honorary Consul of Italy in Burundi. He promised her all the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation in carrying out her tasks.

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation said that Burundi and Italy have maintained, for about fifty years, contacts and multifaceted relations, in particular through bilateral cooperation and decentralized cooperation.

 Mr. Ferdinand Bashikako indicated that although these relations between Italy and Burundi are promising, they have not yet reached a very remarkable level, but he is delighted with the key role and the considerable place occupied by non-governmental italian organizations in the development of Burundi.

“We now need to give new content to bilateral cooperation. This is the wish of the Burundian Government, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation undertakes to work in close collaboration with You, Your Excellency the Ambassador and Madam Consul in order to translate our wishes into concrete acts », Indicated Mr. Ferdinand Bashikako.

  

Note that even the Italian community residing in Burundi and certain Ambassadors accredited to Burundi also participated in these official opening ceremonies of the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Italy in Bujumbura.
