Press conference held by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation on the Ministry’s quarterly achievements for the first quarter 2020-2021.

On Wednesday, September 30, 2020, His Excellency Ambassador Albert SHINGIRO, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation held a press conference on the Ministry’s quarterly achievements for the first quarter of 2020-2021. In his speech, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation expressed his thanks to the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, who continue to reinforce the vision of working together to make Burundian diplomacy more effective and dynamic.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation has indicated that these achievements are inspired by the Government’s Action Plan for the period 2020-2021, the Action Plan of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation for the period 2020-2021 and priority actions. This presentation focused on four main areas:

– strengthening good governance;

– strengthening diplomatic communication;

– strengthening and extending development cooperation;

– the consolidation of a strategic relationship between the diaspora and the Government.

With regard to strengthening good governance, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation reported that the Ministry had conducted a census of all staff and allocated specific tasks to each of the base at the summit.

He also pointed out that suggestion boxes to facilitate exchanges between departmental staff and recipients of departmental services have been set up in buildings housing the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation. Online suggestion boxes have also been created and can be reached on the Department’s website in the French and English versions.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation also reported that the Ministry addressed the issue of foreign non-governmental organizations operating in Burundi. He said that as part of the implementation of the decrees relating to the activities of the Foreign Non-Governmental Organizations that were signed by the President of the Republic in May 2020, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation

recently created the Interministerial Monitoring Committee and the One Stop Shop in question.

With regard to strengthening diplomatic communication, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation reported that the Ministry has developed and adopted a ministry Internal and External Communication Strategy document. He indicated that this communication strategy is useful for the Department in several areas, etc.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation also spoke about strengthening and extending development cooperation where he said that at the bilateral level, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation has monitored agreements and projects with various partners.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation continued his presentation on the consolidation of a strategic relationship between the diaspora and the Government where he announced that a tripartite project (Government of Burundi-IOM-AFD), entitled “Reducing youth unemployment through capacity building and the involvement of diaspora 2020-2021” has just been launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation.

In conclusion, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation said that he was satisfied with the results achieved despite the sporadic difficulties encountered, and that the Ministry would continue to work with dedication and determination to normalise cooperation relations with European Union partners who had taken unilateral sanctions with Burundi, withdrawing Burundi from the United Nations Security Council agenda. , seek new partners, conclude new agreements and improve working conditions for staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation.
